By the end of this post, you should be able to:
i. Define thermal energy, heat and temperature.
ii. Demonstrate rate of flow of heat through different materials.
iii. Differentiate methods of heat transfer.
iv. State the application of heat and prevention of heat loss
What's Thermal Energy?
It's the internal energy present in a system.
The system must be in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium.
This means it has equal temperature.
What's heat?
It is the energy transferred from hot objects to cold objects.
Heat flows from hot to cold.
What's temperature?
It's the degree or intensity of heat present in an object.
Thermometer is used to measure temperature.
It is measured in degrees.
Rate of flow of heat through different materials
Heat is transferred faster in solids
Solid>Liquid>Gas
Methods of heat transfer
Heat can be transferred in 3 ways:
1. Conduction by direct contact
2. Convection eg water and air
3. Radiation by electromagnetic waves
Application of heat
1. For Cooking
2. For Drying
3. For Heating
4. For Smoking
5. For Baking
6. For Cooling
7. For Manufacturing
Prevention of heat loss
1. Use carpets
2. Use curtains
3. Use flasks
4. Use insulators eg cotton, wool
5. Wear black cloth
